Local Information - Agios Nikolaos

Agios Nikolaos

Agios Nikolaos, a picturesque fishing town in the eastern region of Crete, is one of the four largest towns of the island and the capital of the Lassithi prefecture.

Situated on the northwest side of the beautiful Mirabello Bay, Agios Nikolaos is a quiet town that evolves into a trendy and elegant resort every summer.

It is named after the cute Byzantine chapel of Saint Nicholas on "Nissi".

Saint Nicolas is the patron saint of sailors and of the country of Greece.

"Agios", as Agios Nikolaos is referred to by the locals, surrounded by green hills covered in olive trees, is a very pretty town built around a small lake, joined to the sea by a narrow channel.

Agios retains the ambience of a quaint fishing port town, despite its tourist infrastructure.

You can relish delicious Cretan specialties in the numerous restaurants and taverns right on the waterfront, and relax watching the small fishing boats from the many cafés around the perimeter of the lake.

As the sun goes down behind the hills, the music bars make for a hot night life in the town and the clubs are full of happenings, dancing and fun.

This relaxed town offers a friendly welcome from its people, presenting at the same time true opulence in its sumptuous hotels and resorts.

Enjoy real luxury holidays in Crete, in the Agios Nikolaos area, a feast for your senses.
