    Agios Nikolaos, a picturesque fishing town in the eastern region of Crete, is one of the four largest towns of the island and the capital of the Lassithi prefecture. Situated on the northwest side of the beautiful Mirabello Bay, Agios Nikolaos is a quiet town that evolves into a trendy and elegant resort every summer. It is named after the cute Byzantine chapel of Saint Nicholas on “Nissi”. Saint Nicolas is the patron saint of sailors and of the country of Greece.

  • 1. Lake Voulismeni

    The small circular lake in the center of the town of Agios Nikolaos, connected with the sea through a channel, is one of the local attractions, not only because of its unique beauty, but also because of the cozy cafés around it, offering a great view to the traditional fishing boats. According to the myth, the goddess Athena used to bathe in the (as the legend has is) “bottomless”, magical lake of the town.

  • 2. The archaeological museum of Agios Nikolaos

    The archaeological museum of Agios Nikolaos showcases archaeological finds from the Neolithic era, Minoan remains, important items of the Daedalic Period, and few Greco-Roman finds.

  • 3. Saint Nicolas Chapel

    The town of Agios Nikolaos is named after the Saint Nicolas chapel, built on the Nissi during the 7th century AD. A must see attraction of the area, with a number of well-preserved frescoes; it rewards its visitors with a breathtaking view of the town and the Mirabello bay.

  • 1. Villages

    12 kilometers (7.5 miles) inland and high up the hills is the village of Kritsa, a small traditional village, with picturesque houses and a 13th century church with frescoes. The village of Kritsa and the village of Kroustas very close to it are definitely worth exploring, as they are beautiful examples of traditional Cretan villages. Other nearby Villages are Elounda, Plaka and Fourni.

  • 2. Agioi Pantes

    The two islets of Agioi Pantes (All Saints), one with a lighthouse and the other with the All Saints’ chapel, are perfect destinations for day trips. Natural breakwaters of the harbor, now sheltering only “agrimia” (endangered Cretan wild goats, kri kri), offer a spectacular view to the town.

  • 3. Spinalonga – Elounda

    This small islet is a former leper colony and the site of one of the most important Venetian fortresses on Crete. A short boat trip from the port of Agios Nikolaos, Spinalonga also offers the experience of pebble beaches with azure waters.

Beaches

Most of the town’s beaches are awarded with the Blue Flag of the EU and their blue-green waters will blow your minds away. Thalassa Villas are located only 69 km from the Nikos Kazantzakis Airport of Heraklion, which is accessible by a minimum of 16 daily domestic flights from Athens International Airport. There are also direct scheduled flights from many major EU airport (BTA, Monarch, Easy Jet, Transavia, Air One, etc).  Moreover, there are plenty of daily ferry services to Heraklion Port from the ports of Piraeus, Milos, Santorini, Siteia, Karpathos, Kassos, Kos, and Rhodes.

Directions

Upon leaving the airport, take the national road to the East until the exit to Agios Nikolaos. When you reach the town port, turn left and follow the seaside road for 1,5 km.
