12 kilometers (7.5 miles) inland and high up the hills is the village of Kritsa, a small traditional village, with picturesque houses and a 13th century church with frescoes. The village of Kritsa and the village of Kroustas very close to it are definitely worth exploring, as they are beautiful examples of traditional Cretan villages. Other nearby Villages are Elounda, Plaka and Fourni.
The two islets of Agioi Pantes (All Saints), one with a lighthouse and the other with the All Saints’ chapel, are perfect destinations for day trips. Natural breakwaters of the harbor, now sheltering only „agrimia“ (endangered Cretan wild goats, kri kri), offer a spectacular view to the town.
